Hello and welcome to Trash Cat Lit, a new online lit mag hailing from the Northwest of England.
I’m JP Relph, the EIC. I’ve been immersed in the world of flash fiction and short story writing and for a few years and have had my work published in some incredibly diverse magazines both online and in print. Now, I reckon it’s time for me to celebrate other great short form writers.
I discovered flash fiction when I joined an online writing community – the amazing Writers HQ – to plot a crazy novel idea. I don’t recall how it happened, but I was lured to the short side, and what I found there changed the direction of my writing life.
I love what short fiction can do with so few words. How that brevity creates intensity. How it distils experiences and settings and characters until they have incredible depth and richness. How just a glimpse into a life, a moment, a crisis, can leave the reader breathless, wanting more, yet satisfied they read a complete story.
Trash Cat Lit endeavours to bring together beautiful examples of the short form. With two submission options – flash fiction between 100 and 750 words, and short stories from 751 words to 2000 – this is a magazine for story.

Helping me with all manner of trash tasks are my amazing team of writer pals – from the Northeast, Birmingham, Hertfordshire and Holland – they have a wealth of writing and editing experience and an eye for great stories.
So, why the Trash Cat? Well, I’m mildly obsessed with raccoons. They are cheeky, sneaky, smart critters and I love how something so adorable can emerge from a bin and end up in hilarious videos on Insta. It’s nothing more profound than that.
The trash bin opens its lid for its first subs on June 1st. The Submissions page will give you all the details and to see what the Trash Cat covets, visit the About page.
Thank you for stopping by. Come back when subs open and drop something delicious in the trash.
JP
